Constriction vipers were first bred ages ago, as guardians for the treasure hoards of royalty, priesthoods, sorcerers, and other wealthy and powerful groups or individuals. They average 35’ in length, and are often raised by dedicated trainers, who use ancient, esoteric techniques to ensure only the strongest specimens reach adulthood.

These creatures combine a venomous bite with the ability to squeeze their prey to death. In combat, they will bite first (2d8 damage, Save vs. Poison or die). If the target survives the bite, the snake will coil around it. Starting the next round, it will do 3d6 damage per round, until the target is dead. During this time, the constriction viper may attack other targets with its bite, but it can only constrict one target at a time.

Constriction vipers will eliminate all threats before swallowing the largest creature they have killed, then retreating to a secluded location to digest their meal.

In response to some feedback in the Facebook group "Dungeons & Dragons B/X (Moldvay / Cook & Marsh)", I have added two asterisks to the HD entry, to account for the poison and constriction special abilities.

I have also added the XP value of the monster to the stat block.
